Since ancient times human had the keen desire to decorate the body. The caves of prehistoric times, showed hunters wearing teeth and claws of animal giving them an attractive look. These were tribal people. On special occassions they used to wear simple shells and feathers for decoration.
Person wearing decorations from precious materials marked exceptional status. In Europe jewellery, fur and fine fabrics used to indicate the high ranks. In countries like Italy, France, Spain and England wearing precious stones was restricted to some classes.
In nineteenth century, wider public could avail to jewellery due to its mass production. Women ornaments were necklace, earrings, hatpins and brooches whereas men ornaments were cufflinks, watch chains, fobs and tiepins. Rings were worn by both the genders. Even today, jewellery is very powerful status symbol.
