Clowns adopted their different make up and clothes following world famous Joseph Grimaldi as role model. During childhood, Grimaldi played various roles in theatrical entertainment. His father was a ballet master and his mother was a dancer in the chorus line at London’s Drury Lane Theatre. At Drury lane, Grimaldi when 20, played the role of clown for the first time. After several years, Grimaldi became the world’s best-known clown.
He was the first to wear colourful baggy trousers, tufted hairstyle with make up. He never appeared in a circus, but only in theatres. His acrobatics once injured him severely, so he was forced to retire. He made short trousers baggy to hide food such as food and sausages. He had reddish complexion.
All clowns design their own face by painting it on egg and then make up their face.
In a circus clowns is the only character that needs no introduction from the ringmaster. Clowns are commonly known as Joeys due to Joseph Grimaldi’s name. Every year in London circus clowns still gather to pay tribute to Joseph Grimaldi.
