In New Zealand if you book a hotel, you would certainly like to have morning shower in the water heated by the natural region geysers. Its not unique to New Zealand. They are in the whole world. In many places, such as Iceland, it is part of everyday life, this hot water is used for laundry and protecting crops from frost.
Hot springs are found in volcanic regions when rainwater passes through the ground untill it meets porous rocks where it gets trapped like water in a sponge.
The water in the rocky sponge is under pressure given by the water above. As a result, water absorbs heat from rocks below. Cold water, being heavier than hot water, fills up the rock like a sponge driving heated water to the surface. So, it emerges from a fissure on the water bed like spring of hot water with bubbles or geyser, a fantastic blast of steam.
