There is a biggest greenhouse in the foothills of Appalachian Mountains in North America. It uses robotics and artificial intelligence(AI) to produce 45 million pounds of tomatoes per year.
In the future, due to the rising population we will need to produce a higher percentage of food to feed them.
AppHarvest firm believes AI powered greenhouses are the apprpriate ways.
Focus will be on to produc more food with less resources as much as possible amid climate disruption too. And that can be done by using technology.
AppHarvest says it uses 90% less water and yields 30-32 times more per acre than open fields.
This technology controls heat, light and nutrition of the crops. The light of LED’s is used to add to the natural light and crops are grown without soil so that water and nutrients are absorbed directly by the plant toots.
Hundred of sensors and AI collect data from over 6.5 million plants and microclimate is monitored to make sure that crops receive right amount of nutrients and water.
Robots of AppHarvest can easily sense ripe tomatoes for harvestation using robotic arms.
AppHarvest’s tomatoes can be easily found at groceries in US and are sold at normal prices.
