At the top of the buildings in many parts of the world, a weather vane tells us in which direction the wind blows. The vane has a symbolic figure of some kind. The device is commonly known as a weather cock even if it has a cockerel or other figure.
At last supper, when Jesus sat with his disciples, he said to Peter, ” Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.” Pope Nicholas I ordered that cockerel should be placed on the church or cathedral. To give cathedral a higher place than anything, the figure was mounted above the vane.
In past times, it was supposed that wind from a particular direction generally brought a particular kind of weather. Wind vanes were used more for prediction of weather than to indicate directions of wind.
